MTN Nigeria posts ₦1.17tn nine-month profit as data demand and margins lift earnings

The short version
MTN Nigeria said its unaudited results for the nine months ended September 30, 2026 showed strong earnings growth, helped by higher service revenue and improved margins. Profit after tax rose 55.3 per cent to about ₦1.2 trillion, while subscriber and active data user numbers also increased.

MTN Nigeria has reported a sharp rise in earnings for the first nine months of 2026, as stronger data demand and wider margins supported growth across its business.

In its unaudited results for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, released on October 30, the telecoms company said service revenue increased by 23.7 per cent year on year to ₦4.6 trillion. EBITDA rose by 36.8 per cent to ₦2.6 trillion.

Profit after tax climbed 55.3 per cent to about ₦1.2 trillion. Earnings per share also rose by 55.3 per cent to ₦55.6, showing that the improvement in profit was reflected in returns per share.

The company also recorded growth in its customer base. Total subscribers increased by 10.9 per cent to 94.7 million, while active data users rose by 12.0 per cent to 57.2 million.

The figures point to continued strength in demand for MTN Nigeria’s services, particularly data, during the period under review. They also show that the company converted revenue growth into stronger operating performance, with EBITDA rising faster than service revenue.

The update covers the first nine months of the year up to September 30, 2026, and the results remain unaudited.

Why it matters

MTN Nigeria is one of the country’s biggest telecommunications operators, so its results are closely watched as a signal of demand for mobile and internet services. The latest numbers suggest customers continued to spend on connectivity in 2026, even as the company expanded its subscriber base and active data usage.

The rise in EBITDA and profit after tax also indicates stronger operational efficiency during the period. For the wider market, that makes the results significant beyond telecoms, as they offer a snapshot of how a major consumer-facing company is performing.

What it means for your money

For investors who follow MTN Nigeria, the key personal-finance relevance is the jump in earnings per share to ₦55.6 in the nine months ended September 30, 2026. Beyond that, the results do not directly confirm any immediate change in prices, dividends or customer charges, so there is no clear near-term household money impact established by the released figures alone.

What to watch next
What merits watching next is how MTN Nigeria performs in the final quarter of 2026 and whether subscriber and active data user growth remain strong. Investors and customers may also monitor future company filings for any updates tied to full-year results, distributions or operational trends, since the released figures cover only the first nine months and are unaudited.

MTN Nigeria’s nine-month 2026 results show strong growth in revenue, margins and profit, backed by rising subscriber numbers and active data use. The performance underlines the company’s scale in Nigeria’s telecoms market and the continued importance of data demand to its earnings.
